2015: APC Picks Tambuwal As Presidential Candidate
Though the speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal denied attending any meeting with members of the All Progressive Union, DAILYTIMES has authoritatively gathered he was invited to be wooed for presidency in 2015.
Our correspondent authoritatively gathered that Tambuwal had been invited to the meeting but through one of the defecting governors.
A source at the meeting revealed that because he was not confident enough to attend the meeting, APC decided to communicate to him through his (Sokoto) state governor, Aliyu Wamakko.
Those who attended Monday’s meeting included two leaders of the APC: former Head of state and 2011 Presidential candidate of Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Muhammadu Buhari, and former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu. Others are Governors Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti; Babatunde Fashola of Lagos; Bola Ajimobi of Oyo, Musa Kwakwanso of Kano; Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers; Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun; Murtala Nyako of Adamawa and Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto.
This is just in-line with a statement released by the spokesperson of the speaker, Imam Imam, which claimed that Tambuwal went to see the Sokoto governor.
“The speaker went to see his governor who sought to see him and he went there before the meeting commenced and it did not commence before he left the lodge,” he said.
In our investigation, it was gathered that APC governors have decided to find all means to flag Tambuwal as the party’s presidential candidate in 2015.
The source said, “This is a big drama in the political of this country. Whether they want it or not, we have massively suggested that Tambuwal is the best person for our presidential candidate and we will ensure it happens by all means. We brought him to a venue where we are all present so that he would know that we are serious.
“We have invited him for a meeting and sent his state governor to him.
So, he is aware of our intention to get him into the party. He is a neutral person who still maintains high sense of integrity among Nigerians so if we use him, we can easily achieve our goal of bring the dividends of democracy to Nigerians.”
However, attempt to speak with Tambuwal proved abortive.  A close source to the speaker told our correspondent that Tambuwal was aware of APC’s moves to have him with them.
He said, “Though the speaker is not also happy with what is happening in PDP, he has not declared his intention. But it is not impossible for him to join APC if he is offered to contest for president in 2015.”
However, it should be recalled that Tambuwal has recently attended some events organised by APC governors and members.
Part of which is the launching of ‘Opon Imo’ (Tablet of knowledge) in Osun State.
For the first time, Tambuwal, a PDP member, also sent one Femi Gbajabiamila, an APC member to represent him at a leadership summit organised for Ambasador  Kolade.

Only True Federalism Can Salvage Nigeria –Babalola

Only True Federalism Can Salvage Nigeria –Babalola

BY MONDAY UWAGWU
RENOWNED lawyer and educationist, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), yesterday said that only true federalism could save Nigeria from the long-term effects of the contradictions in its political and allied structures.
Babalola, founder of the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, said that it was in that regard that stakeholders in the Nigerian project needed to rally in support of the proposed National Conference of Nigerian stakeholders.
He spoke on Reflections, a Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) programme monitored in Asaba.
According to him, the pseudo-federalist structure which the country was practising was at the heart of the legion challenges facing the country, stressing that the only infallible solution was in their prompt and   effective resolution.
Babalola, fielding a specific question on the mounting insecurity in the country, added: “We must go back to the constitution (to tackle insecurity and other challenges). What is happening now is that the bulk of the money (national wealth) is at the centre. The amount going to the states is so small that the states cannot do anything. Local governments are no more. That is why everything is happening at the centre.
“We need true federalist structure where every state can develop at its pace.”
The renowned lawyer stressed that part of Nigeria’s development challenge was the huge amount being committed to running the country’s political structure, which, he said, needed to be reduced drastically to save money for other development projects vital to the bloom of the Nigerian project.

Delta Central Senatorial election: Majajah calls for fair elections, says Aguariavwodo will win

Delta Central Senatorial election: Majajah calls for fair elections, says Aguariavwodo will win

AS the Delta Central senatorial election scheduled for Saturday, October 12 draws near, many stakeholders and political gladiators are rooting for their individual candidates.
Urhobo leader in Europe, Engineer Austin Majajah, in a statement signed by his media Company in Nigeria, Media Image Managers, MIM, has called on the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure the election is free and fair. The philanthropist and Chairman, PDP Overijssel, Diaspora Holland Chapter, also appealed to Urhobo nation to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate, Emmanuel Aguariavwodo for the vacant Senate seat.
Majajah who is also chairman PDP Vanguard, Europe in his statement called on the voters to vote wisely and get it right in the by-election. He described Emmanuel Aguariavwodo as “the man who can effectively represent and redirect the sliding Urhobo political future from micro minority status to mainstream politics which will bring needed development to the Urhoboland.”
According to him, Aguariavwodo’s past experience in parliament as well as head of the NDDC puts him ahead of other candidates in Saturday’s election to restore the Urhobo fortune.
Majajah, who is also the President of the Nigerian Union, Overijssel Holland, and incidentally the Leader of the Urhobo Community in Eurogio (Germany/ Holland), stated that it is in the best interest of Urhobos to vote for Chief Aguariavwodo in the by-election, because his good rapport with the presidency and the leadership of the legislature will catapult him to party caucus membership where governance decisions are made much to the advantage of Urhobo people. “We have fielded our best; Aguariavwodo is the right choice, he will sure win come Saturday.”
He advised all parties to shun acts of violence at the polls come Saturday.

His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan Commissioned 130 Water Buse
His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan Commissioned 130 Water Buses For Riverine Transportation In Delta State Asaba -02-10-13 by Comrade Sanco Ovie His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State today commissioned 130 water buses at the commissioners quarter Asaba. The governor who was flanked by the Hon. Commissioner for transport Hon Ben Igbakpa who has been adjudged to be the best transport commissioner in the history of Delta State and other members of the state executive council stated that the slight delay in the commissioning of the buses was due to the insistence by the National Environmental Standard Regulation Agency(NESRA) that the state must obtain certain environmental permit before such engines are imported in large quantity into the country except there is a special permit from Mr. President. The governor thank the president for giving the state the special permit needed to import those engines. He underscored the need to have a president from the Niger Delta area who understand the terrain and the need of the people. In his words " Many people don't know the benefit of having a president from our area. I urge all Niger Delta people to support Mr. President because he is from the riverine area like us and he understands our pain" On his part , the commissioner for transport Hon Ben Igbakpan thanked the governor for his support for the transport ministry and urged the beneficiaries of the the boats to make good use of them for the overall benefit of Deltans. He noted that effective transport system is a very important tool in economic development of the state. Some respondents who expressed joy over the unprecedented transformation in the transport sector thanked the governor and the commissioner for connecting their villages to civilization via Delta water buses and the associated low cost of transportation in the riverine areas . Like many economic activities that are intensive in the use of infrastructures, the transport sector is an important component of the economy impacting on development and the welfare of populations. A relation between the quantity and quality of transport infrastructure and the level of economic development is apparent. When transport systems are efficient, they provide economic and social opportunities and benefits that result in positive multipliers effects such as better accessibility to markets, employment and additional investments. When transport systems are deficient in terms of capacity or reliability, they can have an economic cost such as reduced or missed opportunities and lower quality of life. Efficient transportation reduces costs, while inefficient transportation increases costs. The added value and employment effects of transport services usually extend beyond employment and added value generated by that activity. For instance, transportation companies purchase a part of their inputs from local suppliers. The production of these inputs generates additional value-added and employment in the local economy. The suppliers in turn purchase goods and services from other local firms. There are further rounds of local re-spending which generate additional value-added and employment. Similarly, households that receive income from employment in transport activities spend some of their income on local goods and services. These purchases result in additional local jobs and added value. Some of the household income from these additional jobs is in turn spent on local goods and services, thereby creating further jobs and income for local households. As a result of these successive rounds of re-spending in the framework of local purchases, the overall impact on the economy exceeds the initial round of output, income and employment generated by passenger and freight transport activities. Mobility is one of the most fundamental and important characteristics of economic activity as it satisfies the basic need of going from one location to the other, a need shared by passengers, freight and information. All economies and regions do not share the same level of mobility as most are in a different stage in their mobility transition towards motorized forms of transport. Economies that possess greater mobility are often those with better opportunities to develop than those with scarce mobility. Reduced mobility impedes development while greater mobility is a catalyst for development. Mobility is thus a reliable indicator of development. Providing this mobility is an industry that offers services to its customers, employs people and pays wages, invests capital and generates income. The economic importance of the transportation industry can thus be assessed from a macroeconomic and microeconomic perspective. It is important note that farm products from remote locations in the state can be transported easily to urban areas which has a positive effect of reduction in cost of agricultural products in urban areas. It is in the light of the foregoing that the state government invested heavily into the transport sector of the state. To God be the glory, Uduaghan three point agenda is working, God bless the architect of modern Delta State.
