Delta State Attorney-General and Commis-sioner for Justice, Mr. Charles Ajuyah (SAN) says the state government has filed cases against some contractors who collected money and abandoned projects awarded to them by government.
The commissioner disclosed this on Thursday evening while featuring as a special guest of the Asaba Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in Asaba the state capital.
He said that as a result, some monies had been recovered from some of such contractors while the state government was pursuing such other cases to ensure that justice was done.
Mr. Ajuyah also disclosed that, to ensure that criminals are punished, the state government was able to prosecute some cases where 168 persons were convicted for armed robbery, kidnapping, murder and other crimes since 2011 in the state.
While saying that the death sentence law on kidnapping as passed by the State House of Assembly is already in operation in the state, the commissioner added that as part of efforts to nip crime in the bud, buildings verified and confirmed as operational bases of criminals, particularly kidnappers and armed robbers, would be demolished to serve as a deterrent and to discourage people from crimes.
When asked his take on plea bargaining and immunity for governors, presidents and their deputies, Mr. Ajuyah said plea bargaining is a mechanism in justice delivery to settle issues and save time, while the accused person have lesser sentence, adding that the measure has been used in high-profile cases and lesser ones, “but people don’t know due to poor publicity on the part of the lesser ones.”
On immunity clause, Mr. Ajuyah said it is to ensure good governance and avoid distractions.
