Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan administration’s dream of Delta State where the private sector would be greater employer of labour is yielding results. Many organizations, and countries are showing interest in investing in the oil-rich state that is blessed with a lot of other resources.
The most recent among the prospective investors is Philips;  the top echelon of the multi-national energy giant recently met with Governor Uduaghan at Abuja to look at areas where they can partner with the Delta State Government to make life easier for the people.
Governor Uduaghan, who is desirous of a state that will be economically buoyant, especially with the dream of a viable economy when oil dries up (with the “Delta Beyond Oil” initiative), made the executive of Philips to know that an investment in the state is a worthwhile venture which will yield quick returns on investment.
Why not? Delta State is near to the biggest market in  the West African sub-region; the Onitsha market and the state is blessed with a good network of roads, two airports and four sea ports, apart from human resources, and of course, raw materials for industries that abound in the state. Again, the enabling environment for investment to thrive has been created.
Though the meeting with Philips was basically for the energy giant to drive the government’s green economy programme, convincing the company to establish their factory in the state is a welcome  development as it will also create jobs.
Governor Uduaghan said his administration was interested in developing a green economy and will partner with organizations and individuals to reduce energy consumption which is very critical to the issue of climate change. Delta State has always been a trail blazer on issues of positive change and the need for other state governments to key into the struggle to make the earth a better place to live in cannot be overemphasized.
We are witnessing unusual events from the harsh weather and unpredictable rainfall, among others, and as such, other state governors should key into a ensuring green a economy because ensuring a conducive environment or restoration of lost eco-system cannot be championed by a state alone, otherwise, the desired results will not be achieved.
The commitment of Governor Uduaghan towards having a good environment is yielding results as Philips disclosed that they have assessed the energy use of the Delta State Teaching Hospital, Oghara, the Central Hospital, Warri, the new Government House and State Secretariat Complex, both in Asaba, and assured that their energy usage would be reduced by more than half.
To Governor Uduaghan, his administration is partnering with sub-regional governments, international organizations and groups that are interested in developing a green economy to tackle the issues of climate change, stating that Delta State is happy to be dealing directly with Philips instead of going through third parties towards reduction in energy consumption in the state.
Dr Uduaghan also disclosed that his administration is also partnering with Philips in the areas of reducing child and maternal mortality.”We are a state that is very interested in developing green economy. We are very supportive of the moves to reduce energy consumption which is very critical in the issues of climate change,” the governor said.
The Executive Vice-President of Philips, Mr. Ronald de Jong, commended Governor Uduaghan’s administration for working towards a reduction in energy consumption, child and maternal health care, assuring that his organization was committed to partnering with the Delta State government.
“We are happy with the efforts you are making in Delta State … we want to partner with you in your commitment to provide energy for the masses, reduce child mortality and improve the health of the mothers,” he said.
The General Manager in charge of Lighting, West Africa, Philips, Mr Felix Darko, disclosed that the company would soon commence operations in the state once the dotted lines are signed.
There is no doubt that, with the coming of Philips to Delta State, other state governments would be encouraged to be involved in the fight to protect the environment, especially, by reducing energy consumption.
